The Chiapas Amber Museum (MACH)
The Patronato Pro-Reconstrucción del Ex-Convento de La Merced (PPREXCOM) was founded with the goal of creating a space to showcase the extraordinary gemstone of Chiapas to the world.
This space, known as the MUSEO DEL ÁMBAR DE CHIAPAS, is officially classified as a Science Museum and was inaugurated on December 4, 2000. To this day, it remains the only museum in Mexico and on the American mainland entirely dedicated to amber.
Through expert lighting, curated exhibits, and scientific research conducted by professionals, the museum displays over 350 classified pieces that illustrate various aspects of amber, including its origin, formation, location of deposits, extraction methods, trade, and both historical and modern uses.
The exhibition is enriched by texts, labels, photographs, videos, and other materials, ensuring that visitors—whether casual enthusiasts or serious researchers—find comprehensive and engaging information about amber.
With over 15 years of existence, the museum continues to evolve. It actively collaborates with researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP), and independent national and international scholars in fields such as Biology, Paleontology, and Chemistry.
Currently, the museum exhibits several amber pieces that have undergone extensive scientific research and are accompanied by their respective academic publications, while additional specimens remain under ongoing study.
